The first of October is a very important day on the Canadian calendar, and not simply because it marks the beginning of a new month. No, October 1st is special because it marks National Seniors Day here in Canada. Our seniors are the heart and soul of our families and our communities. Through their years of service and dedication to this country, Canadian seniors have helped transform Canada and are helping keep it strong and prosperous. That’s why, this Seniors Day, our Conservative Government wants to remind Canadians to take the time to celebrate the seniors who have impacted your life. Our Government has always been a strong supporter of Canadian seniors. In fact, since first taking office in 2006, our Government has introduced a number of measures which have been aimed at helping Canadian seniors enjoy their golden years with dignity. One of the first initiatives our Government put forward was to allow senior couples the freedom to split their pension income. When seniors are able to split their pension with their spouse or partner, it lowers the taxes that they are required to pay and creates the potential to help seniors double their pension income. Our Government also increased the Age Amount by $2,000. This measure helps middle and low-income seniors by decreasing their overall tax burden, helping them keep more of their hard-earned money. And, as a part of our Economic Action Plan, we’ve built on those initiatives by introducing the largest increase to the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) in 25 years. Our Government is also focused on helping seniors stay involved and active in their communities. One of the ways we’re accomplishing this is through our support for the New Horizons for Seniors Program. This innovative program supports local organizations that are dedicated to helping seniors get involved through volunteerism, mentorship, and many other rewarding opportunities. At the same time, our Government recognizes the need to address the unacceptable number of fraud, abuse and neglect crimes that are being committed against Canadian seniors. That’s why we announced an amendment to the criminal code which lists vulnerability due to age as an aggravating factor in sentencing and will result in tougher penalties for criminals. Going forward, Canadians can count on our Conservative Government to continue to build on these successful measures and continue to support Canadian seniors. Happy Seniors Day!
