The immigration rights memes coming out of the Copa Mundial are one of my favorite things given the deep childhood memories of family warmth amidst a US culture that (back then) had little love for the beautiful game, and the post-9/11 counter to jingoism the 2002 Copa had for me around hopeful solidarity and bridge-crossing. (The urban justice & international development issues being raised by the protests is also a great aspect of this years event.) The rise of anti-immigrant nationalism will fade, the future of the planet is a Third Culture future as we see in the teams themselves... one of many reasons this World Cup is so amazing.
