The interesting part of this article is near the end where they reflect on possible uses of this emotion-detecting data. What if, when you messaged someone, the text came out red if you were angry, blue if you were sad, purple if you were horny? It seems counter-intuitive that we would be so reliant on as arcane a technology as typing for future communication, but if you had told someone in 1989 that texting would be as popular as it is today despite the ubiquity of cel phone technology that allows instantaneous voice communication from nearly anywhere on the planet, they would have laughed. Skype and FaceTime have made instantaneous video calls as easy as picking up a telephone, but how often do you use it versus an instant message? Of course, your predilections today arent going to have much bearing on what your kids are doing in 20 years. Will they opt for direct visual communication or will they prefer the detached and cerebral modes of text-based interaction? Guess well find out eventually.
