The man responsible for the tragic death of 14-year-old teenager Jasmyn Chan early last spring is today facing seven and a half years behind bars. Naseeb Ellahi, 33, of Ash Road, Birmingham, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court this morning (Tuesday, 27 January) following his guilty plea earlier this month to causing Jasmyn’s death by dangerous driving. Jasmyn sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision on Normanton Hill at around 9.20pm on Friday, 9 May, 2013. Ellahi did not stop at the scene to help Jasmyn and her friends and he did not report the collision; he was located and arrested six days after the incident. Chief Inspector Stuart Walne said after the sentencing: “Ellahi’s actions that night were completely inexcusable and caused untold pain and heartache for Jasmyn’s family. “Failing to stop and failing to report a road traffic collision is extremely distressing for the family of the victim; not only do they have to come to terms with the devastating loss of their loved one, they have no answers as to why or what has happened. “Ellahi forced Jasmyn’s family to endure these traumatic thoughts and emotions for almost a week because of his cowardly behaviour to take responsibility for his reckless and dangerous driving.” Ellahi was charged with failing to stop at the scene, failing to report an accident, causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, He was also charged with causing death by driving while uninsured and causing death by driving while unlicensed, however he entered not guilty pleas to these charges. Ch Insp Walne added: “The loss of such a young life is a complete tragedy. Jasmyn had a bright and promising future ahead of her and was well liked and loved by so many people. “My thoughts are with Jasmyn’s family and friends at this time and I hope they are able to find some comfort and closure knowing the man responsible for taking their daughter from them is now behind bars.” Jasmyn’s funeral was held in June at City Road Crematorium with close to 1,000 mourners in attendance. After the sentencing, Jasmyn’s father read the following statement outsuide court: “The man responsible for taking the life of our sweet and loving daughter is now in prison, but it doesn’t ease our grief, we will endure a life sentence. “We have been through so much pain and heartache over the last nine months and we still haven’t come to terms with the fact that Jazz is gone. I don’t think we ever will. “We are pleased he is now in prison, he stole Jazz’s life and has shown no remorse. “No driver will intentionally get in their car with the mindset of taking someone’s life, but this has been the stark reality for us and he left us to pick up the pieces and just question why? Why it happened? Why no one helped to turn him in for 5 days? And why to our innocent and precious child who had such a bright future and life ahead of her. “We cannot put into words the devastation we still feel knowing she is gone and the empty feeling inside that we will never see her sweet, smiling face again. “Our daughter was a loving, friendly girl and was beautiful, inside and out. She was so caring and thoughtful, she always wanted to help people less fortunate than herself. “We would like to thank the public of South Yorkshire, and further afield, for their continued support and kindness shown to our family, and to South Yorkshire Police for their determination to bring Jasmyn’s killer to justice. “As a family we still are heartbroken and filled with absolute sadness over the loss of Jasmyn. There is a massive hole in all of our hearts without her here, and I honestly don’t know how we will ever get over losing her.” Below are extracts from Jasmyn’s mother’s Victim Impact Statement which she read out in court today: “She was the most beautiful thing that I had ever seen. She grew to be a very bright, happy toddler. Even from such a young age Jasmyn was a very loving child and always had a kiss or a cuddle. This part of her never changed. Jasmyn had so much love to give. “Jasmyn in a nutshell was a beautiful, loving and generous girl with a heart made of pure gold. Only last year she had 27 inches of hair cut off so she could donate it to a charity that makes wigs for little girls with cancer. Some people are just born special, Jasmyn was one of those people. “May 9th 2014. The day my world stopped turning. “Every second of every day since Jasmyn’s death has been such a terrible struggle. The grief of losing a child is horrendous. “My daughter was 14 years old, just getting ready to face the world and her dreams. We’ll never know if Jas would have achieved her dreams, we’ll never know if she would have been married, had kids. We’ll just never know. “This is something none of us will ever get over. People keep telling me that time heals, it doesn’t, it just makes me miss her more. “The hardest thing we have ever had to ‘hear’ was that Jasmyn had died. “The hardest thing we have ever had to ‘do’ is live every moment since.”
