The material below was posted on my FB wall. Since not all of the members of this group are FB friends I thought the material below would be of some interest. For my Drum Corps Friends: A few notes about the corps I saw this week at the movie. The show was in Akron Ohio. I took notes in the dark theatre which were very hard to read. Much impossible to decipher. Sorry. Madison Scouts: A nice Jazz theme using some Stan Kenton tunes plus other stuff. The brass soloss were excellent in true Madison style. I was not offended by the tasteful use of trombones. I liked them. White uniforms Ok but not really Madison. Much more entertainment value could have been attained if the music were more familiar to a general audience. (6th place) Cavaliers: They have another dark theme this year. Dance Macabre was for me the highlight. The on field keyboard feature was nice. Drums were good. They tied for first place with the Bluecoats. But they were too often buried back field to get the effect they deserved. (5th place) Boston Crusaders: Their theme this year is Animal Farm taken from the satirical political book. The music Russian flavored, Maybe not all Russian. But nice. Not too good for a general audience. The Guard was outfitted in Pig Masks. I kind of turned of at that point. I did not see much general audience appeal. Kind of Art for Arts sake. The new niforms were great! (7th place) Phantom Regiment: Gorgeous! All around. Tremendous visual appeal. The music was from Swan Lake. It was very popular with the crowd. This is the kind of classical music that appeals to a general audience. One of my favorite units tonight. (4th place) Cadets: Wow! They got a show this year. No question about it. The music and narratives from American History work very well. Some of the sound was quirky. Maybe the theatre sound. The brass and percussion are just as good as last year. The only major prop used was a large ramp behind the Pit percussion. Some folks danced on it and the narrators used it. But it is so big I think they have more planned for it later this year. As of now its overkill. (1st place) Carolina Crown: Arguably the best talent on the field tonight. But not by all that much. A super Brass section building on last years. A much improved field percussion in my view. The music was entertaining and the finale really blew down the house. Definitely a contender for DCI. (2nd place) Blue Coats: Field percussion was very good. (tied with Cavies for 1st) However as opposed to them, the Blue Coats brought their drum down front a lot and the audience loved it. They have a large number of flat pyramid shaped metal platforms. They use these to sell their theme of Tilt. Not sure this theme sells all that well. Not too much general audience appeal. Nice visual appearance generally. (3rd)
