The news from the cycling team for Monday 14 July is here... The final day - Golspie to John O’Groats After a very early start and breakfast in a lay-by, we were delayed due to a broken gear cable on Joes bike. Fortunately we found a cycle shop that agreed to open early, fixing the bike in half an hour. Joe was extremely relieved, not because it jeopardised him getting to the end, but because it jeopardised him winning our King of the Mountains competition. Legs spinning at warp speed, without the repair, he could only achieve 16 mph. Finally we got going and quickly warmed up ready for the climbs of the day. The first started just after Helmsdale and was long but not too steep in comparison to some others we have encountered. The second was considerably steeper but over more quickly. We stopped for lunch in a car park just south of Wick but were eager to get going, partly because it was cold, but mainly because the wind had picked up. The last 16 miles seemed to take an age. We were slowed by brisk crosswinds and despite getting closer to the coast there were still some cheeky hills. Between gasps, however, we were able to look up and see some fairly stunning scenery. Finally we crested the last hill and started the descent into John OGroats in rain and wind. Turning down the opportunity to pay £9.99 for a photo at the ‘official’ John OGroats signpost, we elected instead to take our own photos at the alternative sign (which looked exactly the same as the other one). We are all happy to have completed this well known challenge and will be relieved to recover from the saddle soreness but we will miss the comradeship, the happy banter and the chance to have seen, so closely, the beauty of the British Isles.
