The oldest (~3 billion years old) and largest (~100km wide) crater - TopicsExpress

The oldest (~3 billion years old) and largest (~100km wide) crater on Earth has been discovered in Greenland. The crater shape itself has long been eroded as the rocks left were situated 25km below the surface at the moment of the impact. Still, 3 years of diligent work has amassed the evidence required to demonstrate that the rocks preserved the trace of an impact. Still, that impact postdates a time period called the Late Heavy Bombardment during which most of the planets of the inner solar systems were pummeled by meteorites and asteroids, giving them their pockmarked surface.
