The press’ tired old war dance Whenever the government, - TopicsExpress

The press’ tired old war dance Whenever the government, almost any government, starts heating up the foreign threat ploy we can be pretty sure they’re hiding something big or diverting our attention. Chuck Hagel announces a plan to cut defense spending and the next thing you know Cold War II is on the stove. Ad now for good measure the CIA says it’s worried about Al Qaeda in Syria. It’s the CIA’s job to worry, and Al Qaeda, assuming it is what we claim it is, can menace us from any number of countries, some of them closer than Syria. The New York Times, never at a loss for a chance to pound a war drum, features the CIA’s worries about Syria on the off-lede of its front page today. Anytime we might be able to kill some of Israel’s neighbors pleases The Times no end. We’re a great power, we’re always going to be under threat. Does that justify neglecting our poor, our infrastructure, our working masses? Does it justify clamping a police state on our citizenry? If so, we lost the American Revolution. Democracies should lead by setting examples, not by bashing heads. When the press starts its tired old war dance we need to look around for what’s being put over on us.
