The renowned South African author, Olive Schreiner, acknowledged the importance of a mothers nurturing role when she wrote in her extraordinarily honest 1883 book, The Story of an African Farm: They say women have one great and noble work left them…We bear the world and we make it. The souls of little children are marvellously delicate and tender things, and keep for ever the shadow that first falls on them, and that is the mother’s or at best a woman’s…The first six years of our life make us; all that is added later is veneer…The mightiest and noblest work is given to us (p.193).
