The scheduled 30-minute meeting lasted nearly an hour, as the pope advocated on behalf of the Americans outraged by the Obama administration’s crippling of religious liberty. The sharp differences between the two leaders were evident as Obama tried to sway the conversation to “income inequality,” rather than reproductive issues that are currently being debated in the Supreme Court. The pope noted his “particular relevance for the church in [the U.S.], such as the exercise of the rights to religious freedom, life and conscientious objection,” all values Obama has attempted to crush.
