The speech given by Malala at the UN yesterday was truly inspirational. That young woman spoke so well, with passion and compassion, without a hint of self pity, despite the horrific experiences she has survived, and with maturity well beyond her years. Here is a person with real understanding of the value of universal education, someone who sees that learning, not bullets, is key to our living in harmony on and with our planet. What a wonderfully positive role model for young people everywhere! Our society needs to relearn the value of education and tolerance. Schooling has long been freely available in the UK, along with many other countries. Perhaps as a result of state funded schools for so long, there are many who have lost the perspective of Malala - education is the key to a harmonious and sustainable society. We need to be appreciative of the opportunity given to each of us to become the best person that we can be. I received a wonderful education, all funded by the taxpayer, for that I am ever thankful. I do not have children of my own, but gladly pay my contribution to the education of others. To live in an educated society is a privilege well worth the cost. At the end of this school year I would say, thank you teachers for the invaluable work you are doing to enable our young people to love learning and become, like Malala, members of society of whom we can be truly proud!
