The staff of the Cooper Centers Archaeology Lab Jeannine Pedersen and Megan Wilson-Thuler had the incredible honor of visiting the Wishtoyo Foundations Chumash Discovery Village yesterday. The Village is a unique, authentic re-creation of a working Native American village on a four-acre historical site at Nicholas Canyon County Beach in Malibu, on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. The only living Chumash cultural village of its kind in Southern California. Mati Waiya, founder and executive director of the village, was our guide and teacher. It was an amazing experience and we would like to thank Mati for welcoming us and sharing his wisdom and open heart! The Wishtoyo Foundation protects and preserves the culture and history of coastal communities and fosters responsibility to our waters, marine habitats and watersheds through research, education, community action and where necessary, citizen enforcement. The foundation aims to utilize traditional Chumash beliefs, practices, songs, stories and dances to create self-respect and a greater awareness of our connection with, and dependence upon, the natural Environment.
