The strategic showdown in Baltic region is now becoming more visible. NATO and the US are trying to corner a resurgent Russia through military deployment and modernizing Baltic state armored units. Russian retaliation of this encirclement is over Baltic Sea and in the European skies. As per Washington Post, The aircraft — at least 19 in all — offered reminders of Russian air power at a time of the worst relations between the West and Russia since the Cold War. Russian military aircraft have significantly increased their activity in Europe since the conflict in Ukraine began earlier this year, with NATO scrambling to intercept aircraft more than 100 times in 2014. NATO is concerned over this new Russian air power display in European Skies. “The flights we’ve seen in the last 24 hours, the size of those flights and some of the flight plans are definitely unusual.”, said Lt. Col. Jay Janzen, a spokesman for NATO’s military command in Mons, Belgium. It looks like, like Americans, finally the Russians have also realized the potential of air power as a strategic tool to extend the political influence beyond their own borders.
