The theme is Norma Jeane - The Jim Dougherty Years - 1942-1946 1945 Norma Jeane started to gain quite the reputation for being a good model. In June of that year, Conover took Norma Jeane around California to take pictures for Yank Magazine, paying her $5 an hour. A friend of his, William Carroll, also took some pictures of Norma Jeane. Conover also showed some pictures of her to his other friend, a commercial photographer named Potter Hueth, who took some pictures (the dalmatian picture I have posted) of Norma Jeane and showed them to Emmeline Snively, of the Blue Book Modeling Agency. On August 2nd, Marilyn quit her job at Radioplane and signed on with Blue Book. She paid $25 for her picture to be featured in the Blue Book catalog. She was also offered lessons which she followed religiously. These included makeup and beauty with Maria Smith, fashion with Mrs. Gavin Beardsley, and behavior with Miss Snively herself. The cost of these lessons was $100 dollars, which was taken out of her first paycheck. The Blue Book Modeling Agency immediately found her a job as a receptionist/model for an industrial fair organized by the Holga Steel Company at the Pan Pacific Auditorium. This job paid $10 a day for 10 days. She also took pictures for Douglas Airlines that were released in 1946. Ethel Dougherty began to criticize her daughter-in-laws behavior. She insisted that a modeling career was incompatible with the dignity of a married woman, destined for being a mother. Ethel also didnt like that Norma Jeane had an independent social life. Not putting up any more with Ethels look of disapproval, Norma Jeane went back to live at Ana Lowers home, 11348 Nebraska Avenue, West Los Angeles. She left Muggsy with the Doughertys, who died several months later. In November she met Andres De Dienes, a photographer from Hungary who was 13 years her senior. Their first photo session (one of many) involved Norma Jeane sitting on Highway 101, barefoot, and every bit the girl next door. Norma Jeane next met Raphael Wolff, who agreed to hire Norma Jeane for a shampoo ad if she would lighten her hair with bleach. Norma Jeane soon found herself at the Frank & Joseph Salon where a hairdresser named Sylvia Barnhart overlooked the bleaching process. Jim soon came back on leave for a few weeks. A very happy Norma Jeane showed him her modeling pictures, which Jim showed no interest in. It would be a fatal blow to their marriage. Norma Jeane soon left with Dienes to take a a photography trip that paid $200 dollars, the exact amount needed to pay to get the Ford she shared with Jim repaired. They traveled all around the West coast, first stopping in Zuma beach and traveling all the way to Washington. Gladys was living in Portland, Oregon at the time. Norma Jeane and Dienes stopped to visit her, a visit that Grace Goddard had set up. Gladys was silent for most of the meeting, sitting rigidly in a wicker chair while Norma Jeane showed her photos that Dienes had taken and gave her some candies. Gladys showed no emotion until a distraught Norma Jeane knelt beside her. Gladys said I wish I lived with you Norma Jeane. Fighting back tears, Norma Jeane left her mother with her phone number and some gifts. She cried all the way to the car. On Christmas Day, Norma Jeane called Ana and asked how Jim was. She missed him and Dienes photography equipment had been stolen from the car when Norma Jeane forgot to lock it up. Back to Los Angeles, she met Jim. She didnt want to give up her budding modelling career and Jim didnt know how much longer he had to stay in the Merchant Marines. Exasperated, he asked her to choose between him and her career. Norma Jeane answered that she had no reason to play the housewife because he had been gone for almost 2 years. She asked Jim what was wrong with posing for photographers. Jims answer? First, Jim wanted a housewife, not a ready-to-wear queen. Secondly, he wanted children. Before leaving again, he gave an ultimatum to Norma Jeane : choosing between a models life or being a housewife. Norma Jeane has already made her choice. Lots of pictures with this one!!!!!!!! The first two are two Conover shots, the next two are William Carrol shots, the next one is the dalmatian shot by Hueth, the following 3 are from her time at Blue Book and include her stats card, I have selected one of her Holga Steel pictures, next are two from her first shoot with Dienes, the next 6 are from Frank and Joseph, next 4 are from her Douglas airlines shoot, and the last ones are from her time spent with Dienes around the West Coast. :)
