The use of the vernacular, far from being a Reformation issue, is embedded, as an essential part, in English ascetical theology itself. It is the perfect medium for expressing affective-speculative doctrine, it conveys the domestic tradition of Saint Benedict in a single phrase more vividly then pages of stolid explanation, and it is a common devotional language in empirical direction which itself helps to bind priests and laymen into a united family in Christ.
