The year-end shows and other hair industry events are in full bloom, in the pre-holiday anticipation, and continue to be indicative that simplicity in fashion is often overlooked, to accentuate the glitz or emphasize an insignificant effect of the style, written off, as lame, or easily achieved, while totally misinterpreted as deprived of having the necessary primary ingredients to holds the aesthetic design limitations together…. The modern art of hair design, is portrayed by as many interpretations as there is people, for the sake making a point; lets first identify who we are, to how each one of us chose to do our work (as of last year I’ve retired, after 45 years being a stylist, running salons, teaching classes, and successfully raising three children, now women and men and parents in their own right.) Throughout the years my goal is always been in any way i possibly can within my means, to promote the craft ,at any times Ive had the chance, whether educating clients, meanwhile designing a personalized new look just for them, or teaching assistants in-salon night classes, or seasoned stylist who came to focus at first glance the decorative aspects of the shape of hair design. (changing this view once is imbedded in the individual habits is almost impossible, and a challenge for most teachers in the industry, as the well intended learner wants to change but the steep learning curve coupled with habitual practice of doing the work is always quickest in the hurried world we live in to rely on doing what we have been doing, especially if the client is back in my chair, repeat by doing what is worked in the past …suicidal, dead end of any career, if you ask me…but then again, some people like to hear your story and their hair takes a back seat to the whole salon experience. LOL LOL LOL Yes, through my dedicated years of research, I’ve found that most of us, as we grow in the craft find a way to do the work that is comfortable for us, and ride the monotonous rails as I call it (no offense to the train… love a train ride every now and then.) In other words we take the known path every time, and avoid trying new way to approach the work, to innovate ourselves or have the ability of sharing our progress with the our client, while continuing to render a service that is both practical, creative through technical innovation. In my classes, at times, I would ask hairdressers, what if they would attempt to slow down, to give the new learning a try in a progression of concatenating each steps in a way that it starts to makes sense, a new sense, and not to just rely on the old visual interpretation alone, but use the all elements of proportion and measurements all around you, such as the level of the floor in context of the ceiling and the walls in the salon space…by thinking outside the box…to stubbornly relying on what you know, is to remain in the same place without seeking progress, in one lump-sum; is to miss the point of the growth, that each new learned step can contribute to the whole of the design, and ultimate satisfaction...like Sting sang in his lyrics “I Just came here seeking knowledge the type they did not teach me up in College.” With that said, the instant publishing of some individuals work, on social media, were witnessing (if you know what to look for) the stylists progress in each individual design chapter…(at the high end) as well as, increments of growth on the decorators of hair that are starting to see the light, or in our case the true value of the understanding of the inner working of the shape …( hairdressers that arrange versus construct a shape) which these days, some individuals are starting to take the disciplinary measures of designing hair minding and respecting each level of technical understanding, from the simple dedicated simple steps to bridging the creative mix in abstract interpretations that mirror’s the artist from the reality of Leonardo landscapes to the Miro’ and Kandinsky graphic interpretation of of giving life to abstract art. Finally, I will state my opinion on who I think is in my vision is continually doing forward thinking work, not only as a fashion statement but in a sculptural design, a form at the high-end of todays fashion: First of all, to understand Sassoon, one must think in term of 60 year growth in technical progression … To all the other interpretations of the one time scholars that have broken away to find their own artistic path, I have great respect , by looking at the content of the design versus the grander of the showing, in other words what are the basic principles that hold the design together, like the structure of a building it has to have the technical dependency to hold it together… and if one part in not in synch, like a house of cards, the visual consistency will fold flat to the discipline eye, by not being consistent in making design sense. The freshly picked young tomato asked his elder big brother, whom was more mature tomato, “What to I have to do to quickly ripen, I can’t, wait…” you’ll know in time, if you work hard enough as time will tell, you’ll eventually “Ketchup”.
