There is a curse, it goes May you live in Interesting Times! (Terry Pratchett) These are certainly Interesting Times. I have M.E and I am aware that if I actually listed all the gruesome symptoms for you, we would be here all week and at least one of us may have grown a beard by the time Id finished (quite possibly me). So why am I mentioning this? Today, I have discovered that the illness is going to be reclassified by The World Health Organization to fall under the category of behavioural disorders. Despite a wealth of evidence which shows physical abnormalities in M.E sufferers. Despite those doctors who believe it to be a very serious neurological-immune disease. Why is this bad? Because, all the time you treat a physical illness as a mental one, the capacity for healing is greatly diminished and the chance of recovery comes down to luck, circumstance and hope. As for why it is happening, a controversial doctor has a controversial opinion that seems to have spread like a forest fire, with no regard for the trees (the people) it burns as it spreads. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people with M.E, and this news will be a death sentence for some of them. People are dying of physical complications, and they are also taking their own lives because they simply cannot bear the unrelenting pain anymore. There are children running about right now who will be struck down by it, some as young as three, and believe me when I say, I would not wish this illness on anybody, let alone the young or the kind. If the world health organization is going to turn its back on people who are diagnosed with M.E, there will be even less of a drive for any government to give money towards biomedical research. Doors that might have opened are now firmly to be closed. These are interesting times, and heartbreaking ones. The odds of progress just got smaller..... But one of the other things Terry Pratchett has taught me, is that only means there are a few more zeroes standing in our way. Despite the fact a quarter of sufferers are confined to their homes or their beds,we will fight this as much as we can. I witness the bravery and the courage of my friends. I see their gentleness and their grace, and everything in me that loves, screams that this is wrong. I believe we all matter, I believe our existence is precious. I believe it isnt ok, for people in power to so casually and pointlessly throw us to the wolves. We are back to luck, circumstance and hope. It isnt acceptable that these are considered to be enough. I am twenty-six years old, I do not want to be buried as a statistic, merely because the people who are supposed to look after us, would not open their eyes wide enough to see.
