There is a story I have carried with me for a very long time and it is the perfect time to share it - some may have heard it in church testimony, but for those who have not had the pleasure, today in my unsung heroes phase of Thanksgiving, all will be revealed! :) When I was 19 years old, I was living on the streets of Scranton, literally a homeless person. I did not beg or call attention to myself, but I was ragged, and well dressed Globe shoppers and the like would scarcely glance at me, or if they did it was with the look you give your shoe when you step on a doggy land mine. I felt invisible, and unworthy to breathe air... and I was starving (imagine that!). One day a friend encouraged me to go to the soup kitchen with him and though I argued, the thought of food won out over pride and fear and I followed him there, expecting more looks of disgust and anger - what I felt was my due. But I was surprised - incredibly so, for as soon as I entered the door, a smiling older woman greeted me as Gods child and invited me in as if I were royalty. I was escorted along a line by a series of genuinely happy, loving people who heaped a plate of good, homemade food upon me and urged me to eat all I wanted! I felt like I was dreaming! Because I had not eaten for nearly a week, I was unable to consume alot but what I managed was delicious and given freely. Bit more importantly, when I passed the threshold tp St Francis of Assisi, my place in life changed -- I became a person, a human being, worthy of all that was good --- and I became different that day! God may not appear to be close, but He is - and you can see Him in the faces and actions of any person who thinks beyond what the world requires and performs in the manner of Christ when He was on the Earth. I thank those men and women at St Francis that day -- I did not become a really good person for nearly 30 years but I was given the reaffirmation that I mattered and was worthy in a much bigger world. There is not enough gratitude for that!
