There is a very old joke about the man who boasts about how he owns the very same axe that young George Washington used to chop down the cherry tree. The story-tellers father replaced the handle, and his grandfather replaced the axe-head, but its the same axe. Well, Oxford, Ohio, has a steam fire engine thats kind of like that. It started life as an 1895 Ahrens 5th size single-cylinder pump, straight frame, Registered #2386, with 25” (diameter) x 56” (high) boiler, 3-1/2” x 6” (bore x stroke) pump, and 5-1/2” x 6” steam cylinder. It was delivered to Oxford on July 11, 1895. Then in 1900, the Ahrens straight frame was replaced with a Silsby crane neck frame. In 1906, the one-cylinder Ahrens piston pump was replaced with a two-cylinder Nott piston pump and steam cylinders. In 1916, the original 1895 Ahrens coil boiler was replaced with a new Ahrens-Fox Continental helical water tube boiler. (Oxford Fire Dept. photos, 1986)
