There seemed to be a lot of confusion on the methodology of tanking and why it is important to make sure hate is never focused on anyone but the tank on this page. So I wanted to share some logic with everyone from the perspective of a seasoned tank whom also plays DPS and Healer. Firstly it should be known that full team cooperation is always in your best interest for quickly and efficiently completing battles. Everyones ability to do their job well is very dependent on if the others are also doing their job well. The most widely agreed upon tank strategy works like this: The tank should keep sufficient enmity on all monsters so that you do not lose hate, it should not matter if you are currently sharing target with the DPS. In fact, you should be switching through all current targets to monitor your hate gauges on each monster. Tanking is your job, not DPS, dont get tunnel vision on one monster. If DPS are stealing hate from you, regardless of if youre currently focusing on that monster, you are not doing your job properly. If a DPS aggros an additional monster, just as well it is your duty to pick it up before he receives excessive damage, preferably before he receives any. Coming from a player that has been a Warrior for near a year, trust me. If people are saying the DPS should always be on the tanks mobs they are probably inexperienced. This isnt wow, we dont usually focus fire, and we rarely need to mark, Here in FFXIV we AoE and multitask. You must have more skill than allowing yourself to lose hate. Warriors have a very strong hate move called overpower, use it anytime there is multiple monsters, theres a reason its called Overpower, its OP. This is a one-move-spam hate gaining cone attack. Overpower was even buffed a while back so that people can be lazy and not switch target, now you can just reuse the AoE multiple times if needed and its near impossible to lose hate. If you are a Paladin (with shield oath on) you should flash once to grab basic hate on nearby monsters, followed by single target attacking once (or until you gain sufficient hate) between each target, then again, flashing to support hate retention, continuing on to your single target tabbing again. (I am not PLD so any input on that class technique would be appreciated). Should you choose NOT to retrieve any monster a DPS may pull off you, or got aggro by, this may cause a lot of problems. Letting DPS hold hate would make him suffer interruption(if mage) or fleeing(and not DPSing) to avoid death. This causes the healer to focus on them, thereby wasting more MP, and distracting focus from the tank. Should that DPS die, that monster would instantly be attacking the healer since he spent the duration of the fight building heal hate on the DPSs untanked monster. The healer being attacked will cause interruption, he will die, you may wipe. Healers should also have the opportunity to assist in DPSing so to make every fight go faster and if you are letting monsters run around because DPS took them from you then this is NOT possible because he would be focused solely on heals instead (and healer can actually contribute a really significant amount of damage). Lets not forget that if all the monsters are not centered together then AoEing the lot would be kind of tough, and if you can AoE - you should pretty much always use the ability for efficiencys sake. Sorry for such lengthy post but it seems like there is a lot of confusion here about weather or not youre supposed to let the DPS die (for some insane reason). And it is really important that we know the most efficient way to complete our goal is by working together! I hope you find my little strategy guide helpful and not too long-winded.
