There was a time, some 40 years ago, when a single parent earning the minimum wage was actually above the poverty line. But that wage has long stopped keeping pace with inflation. If it had, the floor for wages today would be about $10 an hour. Instead, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, a figure than hasn’t been raised in four years.
