There will be a fundraiser for Amanda Jo Bonczynski on Sunday, September 15 at the Boelus Civic Center in Boelus, NE from 11AM to 3PM. A roast beef dinner will be provided by Kim Johnson of the Gold Nugget, and a free will donation will be requested. There will also be a raffle that day. Amanda, or Mo as her friends call her, has been a lifelong resident of Boelus, NE. She attended Centura High School where she excelled in girls basketball, volleyball and choir, and graduated in 2011. She was able to finish one year of college at Central Community College in Hastings, NE before her life changed dramatically. In the summer of 2012 Amanda started having bad headaches that gradually got worse over the summer months. She continued to play softball and even taught Vacation Bible School at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Dannebrog, NE. However, by the end of summer, she also started to lose her vision. When she made an appointment with an ophthalmologist, he determined that she had a tumor in her brain and sent her to see a neurologist in Lincoln, NE. Subsequently, she also saw an endocrinologist and an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose and throat specialist). After numerous visits with all three doctors, she had the tumor removed in October of 2012 at Bryan LGH Hospital in Lincoln. Her family thought the worst was over and went on with life. Yet, in the spring of 2013 the headaches came back again. They determined that they hadn’t entirely removed the tumor. This time she underwent radiation treatments, also in Lincoln. She was also placed on large doses of steroids. She seemed to be getting by, but the headaches again became worse. In August of 2013 she saw her family doctor in St. Paul, NE, an MRI was performed, and it was determined that she had fluid on her brain. She had yet another brain surgery in Lincoln to alleviate the problem. When she awoke from the surgery this time, she was in excruciating pain, which they found was caused by air in her brain, and they proceeded to try to force it out. After a couple days she started to lose spinal fluid through her nose. They performed another CT scan and found that they had left a small hole in her brain, and that was where the air was coming in from. She then had her second brain surgery in less than a week to close the hole. After all the surgeries she has been through, she has suffered brain damage somewhat akin to having a stroke. When she gets out of the hospital this time, she will have to undergo intensive speech, physical and vocational therapy. It appears that it will be quite some time before Amanda will be back to normal again. In addition to the fund raising dinner and raffle, donations will be accepted at the Boelus State Bank, P.O Box B, 523 Delaware St, Boelus, NE 68820. The account is in the name of Amanda Bonczynski.
