Theres a big difference between a rapper/MC and an artist. To me, a rapper/MC is that individual who writes rhymes, records songs in the studio, uploads them online and sits around expecting success to come knocking at their door. Everyone is a rapper/MC these days, but theres only a few true artists in the LA circuit. An artist is someone who sees the big picture and treats their career like a business. Everything from putting out records, videos, touring outside of the state you live in, selling merchandise, and going beyond the norm to reach a higher level of success. True artists create movements, while the average rapper/MC just blends in with everyone else. Being an artist is about evolving as a musician, businessperson, and sacrificing in order to reach true independence. Artists like Reverie, Self Provoked, Phora, Snow The Product, Dizzy Wright, Gavlyn, King Lil G, and my team among a few others, who sadly were the same artists I used as examples last year and maybe even the year before that, are truly becoming the face of independent Hip Hop in LA. These days, the game is flooded with too many rappers/MCs so in order to be successful, you have to learn how to brand/market yourself to expand your worth and perception as an artists. Sadly, recording demos and mailing them out to record labels is no longer affective. Sadly, being the most skilled MC in the world with only 400 Youtube hits will not attract any hype. Be creative, be original, and think big. These days, If you want to be successful in Hip Hop, you have be the MC, the promoter, the manager, the booking agent, the publicist, the budget manager and the investor, all in one. Hope this helped some of yall. Peace. #truth #share
