Theres a wonderful word in the introduction to Gottfried von Strassburgs Tristan ... where he says, I write for those whom I love. Im giving myself this task for those whom I love, that world which I love. Not the world of those who would have happiness and bliss without pain. God give that they should have their bliss. But the world of those who recognize that pain is intrinsic to joy. It is not something accidentally present, but it is the intrinsic part. It is an intrinsic part of the experience of joy and rapture. And if there were no pain there would be no joy. And if there were no joy there would be no pain. And there would be no life without these. And I write for those who recognize the two. And by increasing one increase the other. And now lets see how it goes.
