These arent my favorite-favorite but these photos remind me of how lucky and grateful I feel on weekends. I think I first came across Stephen (not pictured) and the San Diego Blues in January when I was at Shakespeare Pub & Grille looking for a place to watch the game. The game in this case wasnt a particular match. It was just futbol. And before that morning I had no idea there were supporters clubs in San Diego---groups of people who gathered together to watch the beautiful game. It was like stumbling on a secret family. After that it was LFC San Diego at Princess Pub & Grille. Finding them was momentous. The Princess had been the go-to place to watch games but for whatever reason it seemed no longer to attract the crowd I had associated with it decades ago. I spent one Saturday morning there in January virtually alone watching Liverpool FC . The only other people, it seemed, were those from the nearby Farmers Market who popped in to use the bathroom or have a seat. It wasnt until a few months later that Steve and Justin started gathering a devoted following of Reds and by May they were filling the Princess back room for even the early morning games. The Bluefoot Bar & Lounge s unique in that it sort of started out an Arsenal bar where the San Diego Gooners gathered to watch Arsene Wegner find new and frustrating ways to disappoint them. But it also was a clandestine Aston Villa hideout where a small but vocal---aggressively and beautifully vocal--- gathering of Villains gathered to a) watch their beloved Claret and Blue and B) give the Gooners a hard time for being so quiet even when their team was winning. The Gooners may outnumber the VIlla supporters, but the Villa always outsings them. And most recently the San Diego San Diego Spurs: Official Supporters Club of Tottenham Hotspur s found a place to call home after wandering around like vagabonds and journeymen. I think I was witness to the first time they hung their banner in The Harp and I was happy for them. Not only because they found a place to hang out but because the owners and management there are Chelsea Football Club supporters and yet they welcomed the Spurs bunch (and everyone else who darkens their doorway) with open arms. Im grateful to the men and women who week in and week out show their love for their clubs. And Im thankful to the growing number of bars that have opened their doors to the people who give us a place to call home. Hope to meet more in 2015 and beyond.
