These vivid poetic lines from Deborah’s song of victory enshrine a great truth. They remind us that ultimately the whole of Creation is against the enemies of god. If “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Rom 8:28), then the opposite is equally ture. The Creation which ‘waits in ager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed” is one the side of the Almighty (Judg. 8:19). “for from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory for ever! Amen” (Judg. 11:36). There is no escape from God. In this truth lies the ultimate comfort for his child. “where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there” (Ps. 139:7-8). And in the same truth the doom of the wicked is written large. There is poetry here, but also sobering reality, as pointed and as final as Jael’s tent peg! “So may all your enemies perish, O Lord! But may they who love you be like the sun When it rises in its strength.” (Judg. 5:31)
