Thinking about the process of accumulating clutter has unearthed - TopicsExpress

Thinking about the process of accumulating clutter has unearthed many basic truths for me. Why is it that we cannot let go? What makes us into different levels of hoarders? Why is it so difficult to reverse this toxic cycle? What about our basic psyche and conditioning makes clutter an inseparable part of us? A very important clue perhaps lies in the way we look at material objects. In Hindi, the word for yesterday and tomorrow is the same. They are time and space entities out of reach. Yesterday is just a memory, and tomorrow is just a fantasy. In that sense, both are intangible. So, the focus lies on today. Our modern lifestyle has taken off that focus. We are, less and less, living in the present. The Here And Now, being in the moment, all these have become just banal jargon, attributed to new age spiritualists. What does it have to do with clutter? Pretty much everything. Most people who live clutterfree, simple lives, are very in-the-moment people. They do not accumulate objects which have memories associated with them, and they do not accumulate in anticipation of the future. They live strictly by the principle of what is here, right now. Somewhere, we have been stripped of that joy. I spend most of my time either lamenting the past, or worried about the future. And my present slips away, unattended, unacknowledged and un-celebrated. This is going to be one primary focus in my process, this ability to live here and now. The ability to celebrate the moment, to live out its potential for joy. When that is done, my baggage of past and future will wither away. This is something we all need to address, at whatever level we are ready to deal with it now.
