Thirty years ago ... right about now ... I was checking to Northwestern Universitys ER in Chicago with a very unhappy appendix. Only one of us would leave. I spent the day in the ER, was admitted to the hospital that evening, and the offending appendix left my building around 11:30PM. I had felt crappy for the previous week or two (of course during finals in graduate school). My surgeon that night was part of the transplant department; as they were about to put me under, I asked two questions: 1) You arent going to give me a baboon appendix, are you? (Baby Fae had received a baboons heart about 6 weeks earlier), and 2) Could you give me a really butch scar - like a Z or something? I remember the OR team laughing as I drifted off to sleep. I was in the hospital for a few days after this, and the surgeon would come by in the evenings and wed watch Wheel of Fortune together. Great care.
