This bird was exactly where I hoped it would be this afternoon: at the Firemens Pond, an orphaned part of Deal Lake in Wanamassa NJ. It was at the extreme range for my K-3/Sigma 150-500/Pentax 1.4x setup. This image (before Facebook did its thing) was made up of pixels straight from the camera with no magnification in post-processing. But, I was expecting it to be a Solitary Sandpiper, and in the field I was sure that was what it was, but now I look at the image on screen, I think that rather it is a non-breeding Spotted Sandpiper because of the browner color and the lack of detail in the head, neck and back. Is this right? Either way its a new bird for the year.
