This dog is in the Mendocino Animal Control Shelter and needs to find the right adopter. Please help network him if you can. ***SPECIAL ADOPTER NEEDED*** A cat free home, where he would be the only dog and needs a strong, experienced owner. Andre is an eighty pound, 2 year old, neutered Rhodesian Ridgeback/Boxer mix. His owner passed away and the unfortunately the family could no longer take care of this big, strong boy. Andre is just that, big and strong. He is in need of an experienced dog owner that understands Andre cant leave the shelter and go play at a dog park. He has never been taught how to socialize with other animals and has a strong prey drive. Therefore, this guy has to have someone who knows his limitations and has the time and leadership skills to give him the training he needs. Im not stating that Andre is un teachable or that he is a bad dog, in my opinion he is the quite the opposite. It has been hard work training him to focus on his handler and to stay focused when he is around another dog but not impossible work. He doesnt want to go fight other dogs, he just doesnt know how to play, enter act or socialize politely, which can easily start a fight between him and another dog/dogs. Andre loves playtime in the play yard. He runs back and forth engaging play with each stuffed toy and ball he comes across, after 15-20 min. of play time and hes ready to go for a walk, thats when hes ready to take on a learning role. He is responsive to positive reinforcement aka treat training. Again, he is easily distracted and strong, so he has to have a confident, alpha leader to ensure his safety and the safety of others. This makes finding the right home for Andre much more difficult but I have faith that he will get the stable, loving home that this guy so deserves. Andre needs a dog and cat free home to live in, possible ability to live with other dogs eventually, when trained and socialized properly, which can take time.
