STATEMENT FROM THE SHUAR NATION ON THE MURDER OF TIWIRAN FREDI TAISH RAMIRO AT THE HANDS OF THE ECUADORIAN STATE ARMY Kupiamais , Canton Gualaquiza , November 8, 2013 From Gualaquiza Canton province of Morona Santiago , province of Shuar We, the Shuar communities and organizations , supported by GONOAE (Government First Nations of the Ecuadorian Amazon ) and APS ( Assembly Southern Peoples ) , express our deep sense of outrage and condemnation of violence by the State to the Shuar people. 1. We hold the national government responsible for the death of Ramiro Taish Tiwiram Fredi . This murder is actually a state crime against a beloved brother who died in Shuar territory, in his community, when he was caught in a military operation against mining whilst he was fishing in the Rio Zamora with his family. We demand compensation for the widow and two orphaned children of Taish. 2. We have been accused of illegal mining. We have an agreement with the National Government to carry out small scale artesenal mining which enables us to make enough money to educate our children. 3. Many people of different Nationalities have come into our territories and have armed themselves and have instigated small to medium sized mining activities illegally. 4. Chinese and Canadian Companies have come to our territories to start large scale industrial mining which will pollute our water, our lands, our Nature, and destroy our culture and ability to survive on our ancestral lands. 5. We will not be silent. We will continue to stand in opposition. We are unarmed and have no fear. We will defend the land that our ancestors left us. If we must die for a just cause, to protect our lands so that 14 million Ecuadorians can live with clean water, clean air and plants useful for life, we will do so. 6. We urge all Ecuadorians to become aware of the seriousness of the situation which threatens our existence. 7. We declare a State of Emergency. We demand the immediate withdrawal of Transnational Corporations from The Cordillera Del Condor. Zamora Chinchipe and Morona Santiago. We demand the withdrawal of the military from our territory. 8. We call on social, environmental and human rights organizations, both Nationally and Internationally to condemn this crime, perpetrated by Ecuadorian Security forces against our people.
