This is finally NOT about me (haha). My 10 years old son, Justin, has Chiari and Syrinxes, repeated 3rd grade last year because he struggled academically. The staff who worked with him last year, his father, and I felt he was ready to move up to 4th grade so this year he is in 4th grade. I noticed since school started on September 4th, he has been struggling ALOT in pretty much all subjects.. Social Studies, Reading/Writing, and Math (We have Common Core and we all hate it, too complicated) when he has homework, he tells me he cannot do it by himself so I try to help him and I see..I hate to say this but knows NOTHING. When we are done with one problem, and go onto the next one, I have to explain to him all over again what he needs to do. He DOES forget really quick and I dont blame him, he gets very frustrated...so am I. I dont know if it is really because he forgets (after just a minute of explaining what he needs to do) or because he is not paying attention. I know, I forget alot too but I dont forget too quick. Oh, he also has ODD and ADHD..he cannot just stay still and do one thing for a length of time and he has behavioral issues, requires to wear glasses because he is going blind in his left eye but refuses to wear glasses. I am going to contact his teacher at school, and request a meeting so we can meet and discuss about academics and about Chiari & Syrinxes because she doesnt know what it is, of course, so I want to explain to her.. He only has IEP for speech therapy, and he also gets AIS (extra help) in Math and Reading..but I dont think it is enough. Do you go through similar things with your child, what should I do? What do I request in school? What can I do to get him to wear glasses because seriously, he cannot see anything and when he reads, his eye crosses really bad and struggles to read. I have tried reward method but it doesnt work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you :) Hope you guys have a great day.
