This is just a random post by me...a psychiatric therapist, life coach, aunt, friend, and mom of 4 amazing kids. Im so freaking sick of this Anti-vaccine movement. People....vaccinating your kid does not cause autism. Its been proven in all the major medical journals. Yes! 1/68 kids are now diagnosed on the spectrum. Know why? Because we know more about autism now then before. Want to take me on? Feel free. Have you had autistic kids climb you like a jungle gym? Spit in your face? Hug and kiss you as they sat on your lap while the psychiatrist talked to mom? Do you have boxes of pictures drawn for you that really make no sense but were given to you as they walked out the door? Do you know what it feels like to have a parent cry in your arms because you did not judge them. Instead you just hugged them and whispered words of hope? These parents had 2, 3, 4 even 6 kids. Some had 2 kids with autism. Some just one. One mom had 6 beautiful blonde haired boys. 5 were on the spectrum. All went to the same doctor. They were very close in age. Explain that. She had two uncles who were probably autistic. Our generation was never really diagnosed. Special Ed laws werent put into place until the early 1970s and no one knew what to do. I have witnessed the evolution of autism from my days at the University of Michigan in the mid to late 80s...The accepted theory then was that mothers caused it. Refrigerator mothers was the term. I dug out my very old psych book. Shall we blame you...Mom? Dont think so. We do enough to mess up our kids. ...but autism. NO. In the mid 1990 s I earned my Masters in Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh. It has one of the top 3 programs in child psychiatry in the country. My husband did all his work as a child psychiatrist there. He ran the autism clinic. I saw autistic kids from all areas, including the Amish. Moved back to MI in 2000. We started our own practice. Autism hasnt increased. We just know more. A lot more. And thank God! Early intervention is the key. I can spot autism in about 60 seconds. Vaccine or no vaccine. The thing is. Autism isnt a death sentence. A child exposed to these diseases weve basically eradicated can die. There isnt more autism. We just know what to call it. There is, unfortunately, a huge upswing in some of deadliest diseases. Just food for thought. My kids are vaccinated....it was never an issue. Then again, I live in the medical world. And advocating for children and parents has, and always will be, my passion.
