This is not new news. In fact, it is such old news that it seems incredible that ocean advocates have not been able to insert the ocean into the persuasive argument. The ocean sits at the epicenter of the climate problem; it is the penultimate reservoir of emission consequence and it embodies most of the potential for solutions. One of the reasons this situation endures is that there is no ocean lobby to make it so. Leonardo DiCaprio will address world leaders, and as an extraordinary donor to ocean sustainability, he must put the issue squarely on the UN Agenda. The UN IOC and UN-Ocean, the organizations internal agency and committee for ocean issues, attempt to voice this perspective from within, but it will only be from without that the message will find traction. The New York Peoples Climate March is but one such expression. Climate has been reduced to numbers: easy to understand, and yet easy to ignore. Until we as #oceanadvocates can make the case that climate itself is a function of the ocean (along with its impact on fresh water, energy, food, health, and security) the UN will continue to struggle with the compromised attitudes and action, or lack thereof, by international and national entities.
