This is sad on so many levels, but the one that upsets me the most is the sheer ignorance about what scientific theory is. These ladies appear to think that it is a belief or random speculation, guided by nothing; as though one were to say I believe in unicorns, just because I do. What kind of education did they even receive? They sound like utter nitwits. Is this how we are educating people in this country? For the record, scientific theory is defined in the following way... A scientific theory summarizes a hypothesis or group of hypotheses that have been supported with repeated testing. If enough evidence accumulates to support a hypothesis, it moves to the next step—known as a theory—in the scientific method and becomes accepted as a valid explanation of a phenomenon. Scientific theories are the most reliable, rigorous, and comprehensive form of scientific knowledge. This is significantly different from the common usage of the word theory, which implies that something is a guess (i.e., unsubstantiated and speculative).
