This is what is coming up on the next edition of Hyperallergic Weekend - March 29 and 30th. John Yau takes a look at the pink handbags the artist Andreas Slominski has carved out of Styrofoam: “I began to see the handbags as another way of biting the hand that feeds you, of exposing the foolishness of those who equate art with fashion and money, regardless of how expensive or awful the fashion might be.” Yau also examines the new paintings of Gary Stephan: “Working with this circumscribed vocabulary, he composes paintings that twist the figure-ground relationship into a Gordian Knot, a layered, two-dimensional Rubik’s Cube that never quite fits together nor can ever be taken completely apart.” Thomas Micchelli reviews Piero della Francesca: Personal Encounters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: “Though modest in scope, the exhibition reflects the epic scale of the Early Renaissance master’s frescoes while offering a concentrated glimpse of how startling and of-the-moment his work can be.” Hyperallergic Weekend’s music critic Lucas Fagen returns with Part 2 of his March critical catalogue, checking out Toni Braxton & Babyface (“a fearless exercise in honest and unflinching emotional expression”), Foster the People (“definitive proof of just how corporate the indie-rock scene has become”), Schoolboy Q (“the first four or five songs here are works of untrammeled genius”) and Real Estate (“It feels silly to accuse a band called Real Estate of being bland and suburban, but there’s no getting around it”). Guest writer Gwenaël Kerlidou discusses the recent rediscovery of the Russian-born painter Serge Poliakoff (1900-1969), whose fame peaked immediately after World War II: “Poliakoff, an unequaled colorist, remained at his best in the smaller, denser oil paintings from the fifties, in which the artist’s use of a palette knife maximized the interplay between the under-layers and the impasto, gesture and color.” And Weekend Words expects to win by a nose.
