This just in from a friend with connections: "The UCMJ (uniform code of military justice) requires you follow all LAWFUL orders. If Congress gives a thumbs down on Syria and the President does ahead and attacks any way, would the military personnel be acting on a lawful order, or would they be violating their oath to defend the constitution, against all enemies foreign and domestic? Are we, as a people, prepared to dance along the edge of a constitutional abyss over punitive military action against a heinous act, that as brutal and as evil as it was, does not affect us directly? If there was a mutiny against such action, then what? Hail them as heroes or send them to Guantanamo Bay? There is a lot of tension in a lot of places." Sitting in my office writing about the Civil War (1861-1865) and rolling Constitutional issues around in my head, and now this comes in . . . It makes my head hurt. Thoughts?
