This long video shows how Mecca was not the original place of pilgrimage and is not even mentioned in the Quran. The oldest mosque / sanctuary is pointing in another direction. Near the end it gets to the conclusions that: Abdullah Ibn Al Zubayr lead a rebellion and lost. Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan beat his army and others. He built the Dome of the Rock, and setup Mecca as the place of pilgrimage. It concludes that Mohamed and Islam most likely started around the Dead Sea (due to a Quranic reference to the remains of Sodom), or in the Negev desert due to the descriptions of the area.
