This morning, the private Atheist Republic group, with more than 54,000 members, was removed by Facebook. The Atheist Republic group, which was designed as a private gathering place for atheists to communicate in a safe environment, including security from the threat of death due to laws in members own countries, had accomplished that and much more. Every day, members brought forth issues regarding anything from coming out to relatives, to relationship advice with someone with different religious views, and even preventing suicide. The reason provided by Facebook for the removal of the group apparently stemmed from a number of reports on threads started by group members. However, with the group being inaccessible, it is not possible to confirm this. This is despite it being one of the best moderated groups on Facebook. Hate posts within the group didnt last very long before they were taken down by a group admin. Even though it was a large group, all hate speech was taken care of very fast. We are investigating whether this was a planned attack, as it has been on some other pages and groups. Other groups and pages have been taken down by people attempting to abuse Facebook algorithms to remove groups they disagree with. If anyone has any information, suggestions, or advice for dealing with this situation, please share it here. Thank you very much for your patience, support and understanding.
