This morning this is what I did. I do it almost everyday first thing and I have done it now for most of my working life, which is 50 years to the day: Some of my favourite sights are also my favourite times. I love wintertime in a warm workshop when it’s still dark, windy and cold outside. I like opening the workshop door and breaking the silence as the lock turns and the latch clicks in the darkness when the light hasn’t yet reached full daylight. I look to capture the first gleam of light glinting on tools waiting to work and stools we made with our own hands standing to attention as I walk through to my bench. Before I click the light switches I wait a moment to smell the air and savour the sight as I stand staring into what will become my workday yet to unfold. There is no mass making anything here. No sweatshop bosses, no time cards punched and only a day ahead for me to transform from nothing to something with my own hands.
