This mornings sounding from Old Hickory shows a moist, and very unstable environment in place. For you weather nuts out there, a few of the highlights are: precipitable water of 1.91 inches, K-index of 37, lifted index of -5.7, convective available potential energy of 2,844 J/kg. If you take the square root of that last figure, it gives us a maximum theoretical updraft speed of 53 meters-per-second, or 119 miles-per-hour. We are expecting thunderstorms in Middle Tennessee from late morning through the afternoon. We are not outlooked for severe storms, but we cannot rule out an isolated severe occurrence or two. With very little low-level wind shear in place, tornadoes are not likely, so the primary threats are damaging microbursts, and perhaps even some hail. Also, these storms will likely produce very heavy rainfall, so brief minor flooding, such as ponding of water on roads, may also affect a few places. (MAR)
