This native New Orleanian is embarrassed to admit that today was the first time we visited the WWII Museum. Im breathless. We converted the admission to a membership after seeing JUST the Boeing Pavilion, where a real B-17 hangs from the ceiling (some of you know that my father flew 47 combat missions as a tail gunner on a Flying Fortress). Bob and I started with a visit to friends working on the restoration of the PT boat - just amazing. When its done, it will be launched and you will be able to go out on it. Then we saw the Tom Hanks movie, the Tang Final Mission exhibit, had a quick lunch at the American Sector (thought of you, Tom Zadoyko), then tackled the main museum. we made it halfway through the Normandy exhibit. Well be back! The coolest part, I think, is the great care taken by the curators to make it individual and personal, with the oral history exhibits and the individual stories throughout. You are left with a deep understanding of the war and its impact on people. The part about war production and its impact on womens and civil rights was eye-opening. So was the fact, brought home in Beyond All Boundaries (the Tom Hanks movie) that the Allies launched all three major invasions within days/weeks - Rome on June 4, D-Day on June 6 and Saipan on June 15. How the HELL did they pull that off? Also - that it was by no means clear that we would win. In fact, its kind of miraculous that we did. I am left amazed, grateful and humbled.
