This week Jed Hinkle said that students receiving financial aid - TopicsExpress

This week Jed Hinkle said that students receiving financial aid are more likely to perform poorly because they dont work to pay their way. That got me a bit hot under the collar. For 23 years I have had between 100 and 300 students a year in class, so I know something firsthand about their performance. Most students receive some kind of financial aid. A small number of students’ families are able to pay their room, board, and tuition. Some students from both groups are just not ready to commit to college and they perform poorly, but there is absolutely no difference in the performance between those receiving financial aid and those not needing it. My opponent is simply prejudiced toward low-income people. What he misses is that everyone willing to work hard deserves a fair a chance to make the most of their talents and abilities, and that benefits all of us. But for economically disadvantaged students, the willingness to work hard is not enough. Financial aid gives them a fairer chance. Hinkle brags about working to pay for his education, and says it’s not the “taxpayers’ responsibility” to pay for students to go to college, but he’s misinformed there too. He graduated from MSU – a state funded university. At least 50-60% of the cost of his education was paid by taxpayers. So it turns out that he’s also “one of those people” who “received something for nothing.”
