Those that know me will know this is something that I have been saying for years......As far as I am concerned the Guided Reading way of teaching only works for those students who have absolutely no difficulties learning to read at all....to be specific, those children who you could sit in a corner, with their back to the rest of the class with earphones on and be engaged in another completely different activity, and they would still learn to read. Those types of children are few and far between. All other children would benefit much more from learning in a structured sequential multisensory manner where everything is integrated and explicit. Even typically developing readers would benefit, and be able to move quicker and more thoroughly through the process of learning to read and therefore be able to engage at depth with literacy. If we understood this, and taught all students this way, I believe we would see less middle school slump - Those who have raced ahead and fooled many teachers with their ability to memorise the visual shape of a word, but have not learnt to thoroughly decode, and who come crashing in grade three or four when the demands of literacy increase. In addition, those children who have learning difficulties like Dyslexia would have been given the best start available instead of internalising the fact that they are failing and having to relearn everything at a later date. We need not to be guiding our children to read, but teaching them carefully, specifically, directly and explicitly! theeclecticreadingteacher/2011/09/02/guided-reading-as-an-intervention-for-dyslexia-not/
