Those words are partially inspired by Mohamad Al-Ississ, professor of economics at AUC and Harvard. We live in an age when people who have meaningful things to say are often silent, and those who say and do things of little value dominate the scene (proof: open the news or, better yet, scroll down and read 10 posts beneath mine). It is the responsibility of the former group to speak up, and to help inspire the other group and also themselves to become better people, and to reach what is meaningful. In other words, if you can improve what surrounds you, go for it. Do not just improve yourself. Maybe Allah will guide others through you. و أمر بالمعروف و إنهى عن المنكر.
