Thursday, October 31, 2013 Nehemiah 9:16-21 – “But they, our ancestors, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and they did not obey your commands. They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate; slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them…….You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst. For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.” God had rescued the Israelite ancestors from enslavement. He fed them, gave them water, land to live on, and laws to abide by. God stayed faithful to His chosen people. The Israelites of this time then mourned and confessed to the Lord the wrongdoings of their ancestors. They became arrogant and did not obey the commands or laws of the Lord. God had provided them with new lives, lives in which they could prosper and help to spread the name of the Lord. But they fell short. Though they fell short, God is a God of redemption, “But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them.” Time and time again we all fall short of the glory of God. We are not a perfect people. We are not worthy of the grace and mercy that God sheds upon us, yet He continues to forgive us, He continues to provide us with what we need to keep on living our lives. We are blessed beyond belief. “For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.” God cared for the Israelite ancestors even after they had disobeyed Him. God does the same for us. All He asks for in return is that we love and obey Him and His commands. Response: Share about a time that you fell short of the Glory of God, and how God was faithful. Prayer: Pray that we, as a community, can stay obedient to God commands.
