Time for another day of this Sesame Street Week I decided to hold, - TopicsExpress

Time for another day of this Sesame Street Week I decided to hold, in which I talk about a few characters each day. First for today Ill talk about Ernie. Ernie, along with his roomate Bert, was one of the first characters created for Sesame Street. They were among the few Muppet characters to appear in the test pilots and they also hosted This Way to Sesame Street, a sneak preview special that aired two days before Sesame Street did. Ernie is the more fun one, preferring to play with his Rubber Duckie and have fun while Bert would rather have a quiet time. Ernie has had many great moments without Bert, including several interactions with Cookie Monster, among others. Ernie sang the first Sesame Street song to become a big hit, Rubber Duckie. A number of other Rubber Duckie songs would appear on the show over the years, and Ernie has sung a number of other great songs, including Imagine That and I Dont Want to Live on the Moon. Of course, Ernie and Bert have also sung a number of great songs together, including Imagination and But I Like You. Ernie was originally performed by Jim Henson, who created the Muppets and was involved with not just Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, but also Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and came up with the concept for the series Dinosaurs. Hensons other Sesame Street characters have included game show host Guy Smiley and, of course, the most famous Muppet character, Kermit the Frog. Since Hensons death in 1990, Steve Whitmire has taken over as both Kermit and Ernie. Kermit the Frog is perhaps more famous as part of the Muppets franchise than Sesame Street, but he was on Sesame Street quite frequently during Jim Hensons time on the show. In fact Kermit had been around for 14 years before Sesame Street began. Kermits best-known role on Sesame Street is probably that of a news reporter for Sesame Street News, where he often provided news reports based on classic nursery rhymes and fairy tales.
