To: Mr. Corbat, CEO of Citibank - TopicsExpress

To: Mr. Corbat, CEO of Citibank (michael.l.corbat@citi) Dear Mr. Corbat, The Committee for Better Banks’ (CBB, a coalition of New York Communities for Change, Make the Road Action Fund and ALIGN), CWA (Communications Workers of America) and UNI Global Finance (UNI), the global union representing 3 million finance and insurance employees in 237 trade unions world wide, are working together to improve conditions for bank workers globally and in the United States. Philip Jennings, the General Secretary of UNI Global Union, sent you a letter on the 27th of January requesting a meeting with you, but so far, UNI has not received any response. In many countries around the world, Citibank operates under the ILO Conventions regarding freedom of association for your employees, the right to organize and the right to bargain collectively. We are concerned that in the United States Citibank workers have not been able to form a union to defend their rights and ensure a constructive social dialogue with management. UNI Finance, CBB and CWA have organized a day of action in New York City February 18th to highlight key inequalities and injustices faced by America’s finance workers, bringing together bank workers from across the world to march on Wall Street and show their solidarity for the cause of America’s downtrodden employees. Average bank worker wages are so low that almost one third of bank tellers in America receive some sort of public assistance. Over a third of tellers are living at or below poverty level in contrast to the executives of Wall Street. US bank workers have not been able to express their rights to organize together in a union. This means that the employees don’t have a voice and are not able to bargain collectively for fair pay and better working conditions. We are asking Citibank to start a dialogue with the trade union movement to ensure the rights of free association for workers in the United States are respected. As a major global financial institution, Citibank can take the lead in restoring the public image of US banks by leading the way towards a new banking culture, through rebuilding the trust of customers and staff. Yours sincerely,
