To be effective, a 501c3 (no matter what population you serve or your purpose) must have a strong mission. In addition, you need to add members to the board of directors that have a variety of skills and knowledge. Organization and planning is key, as is recruiting, training and retaining volunteers. If you do not have a written plan, which changes with needs, you are just spinning your wheels. I have been observing in the rescue world for quite some time, and have come to the realization that most rescues are good hearted but have no experience or knowledge on how to grow the rescue successfully, from planning long range, recruiting volunteers with skills, utilizing the volunteers, fundraising and grant writing. Pledges are way down, the same people are being asked for funds. This does not allow successful growth of a rescue. I am seriously thinking about writing an operating manual for rescues covering all of these aspects. I have almost 20 years of experience managing not for profits. Let me know if you are interested in this.
