To be touched by brilliance of mind, as he had been, was to be - TopicsExpress

To be touched by brilliance of mind, as he had been, was to be transformed; it had made him unavailable for the average, the ordinary. What was perceived as intense in him was merely the afterglow of past affairs so potent they had needed to end in order to endure. But if you looked careful there was a cemetery of beautiful things in everyone, stone angels, whispered prayer. The large, mercurial friendships had come to pass but they had given him so many stories and supple reminders of genius, of wilderness heart, of lives built on the firm principle that to live for art was the only motive for a life. When he woke some mornings he sensed the entire world a result of longing; it had kept things in being. This was evident in everyday things. The green that ran through the veins of leaves, the white in surging clouds, pigeons passionately feeding something secret to each other, the hours one might spend imagining the life of a beloved – like atoms that lived in throbbing distance of each other, longing was the wing of the evening that contained the world in its cover. It was best not to be entirely alive to the wonder of things; it was sensible to glimpse this now and again, and then to turn ones head away, disbelieving of proof.
